At Mackit we provide modern residential architecture services for discerning clients.
Established in 2008 by our director James Mackie, we recognise and fill the niche for bespoke modern homes that can be built efficiently and precisely.
Based in Greytown in the Wairarapa, we design beautiful, practical and enduring new homes or renovations both locally and New Zealand wide.
WHAT WE DO
At the beginning of a design project we start with a blank piece of paper. You won’t find a catalogue of our plans.
We believe that good house design should always be inspired by the environment in which the home will sit and the people who will live there.
Excellent design includes incorporating sustainability, passive design and energy efficiency. It’s not only nice to have, we believe it’s a requirement.
No two design processes are the same, because no two clients are the same – we offer a bespoke service that is unique to you.
Having your home designed by someone with our building expertise is a huge advantage right from the start.
Your home will be designed with the knowledge of what will be possible and practical for your budget. We promise we’ll be honest about what isn’t.

Our director James’ skills are wide reaching. Being a registered designer with Architectural Designers New Zealand and a Licensed Building Practitioner in both design and carpentry, he has a unique edge when it comes to bringing your bespoke home to life.
Our up-to-date building knowledge and experience gives us a firm grasp of building costs, and a trusted network of builders. We can offer various levels of ongoing engagement, including managing the tender process, builder engagement, and construction phase observation.
We take pride in our knowledge of the latest building theory and techniques. We design your home to be built to the highest standard of craftsmanship and detailing, and we are there to help bring it to life.
OUR PROCESS
CONCEPTS
A design brief, encapsulating your needs and wants, is our first step. From there, we undertake research and preliminary site investigations, to inform the design. Next we start sketching your concepts – first by hand, then on the computer – to produce a photo-realistic presentation set.
DEVELOPMENT
Now we have the bones of your design, it’s time to add the detail – from the big ticket areas like cladding and window selections, right down to specifying the kitchen sink and door handles. You can have as much or as little input as you like during this phase – the process is unique to you.
DOCUMENTATION
We prepare your design into a complete plan set for Council and construction. Our highly detailed plans mean that construction can be accurately priced, reducing the risk of cost blowouts during the build. If we haven’t already, we will reach out to potential builders for pricing on your behalf.
CONSTRUCTION PHASE
Now your home is ready to come to life, we will be your advocate during the process of engaging a builder. We also offer construction observation, which can include regular site visits and consultation, to ensure a seamless process. Think of us as the bridge between you and your builder.
