Project: Spine Concept.
Context: Flat suburban section.
Brief: A modern, comfortable home for a retired couple to downsize to. A design with architectural presence to make a statement on a bare site with no views. Warm, open living spaces, bedrooms with morning light, and privacy from the street front are key boxes to tick.
Response: A grey concrete wall forms the spine of the home, giving much needed privacy to the front facade. Starting low on the north roadside corner, it angles gently upwards as it snakes diagonally through to the rear of the home, adding thermal mass throughout. Dark charcoal boxes with generous full height glazing house the required living, sleeping, and guest quarters. Custom timber joinery and parquet flooring add warmth and texture to the interior.
